The Mummy is a symbol of eternal life. The preservation of the physical body was part of the preparation for the afterlife. It was believed that the dead would rise again at some time chosen by the Gods. "Your flesh shall rise up for you. Your bones shall fuse themselves for you. Your members shall collect themselves for you. Your flesh shall reassemble for you"...so says an ancient text. From the highest Pharaohs to the lowest laborers, all ancient Egyptians prepared themselves for death by building tombs for themselves, and practicing mummification. The idea was simple. In the afterlife, physical bodies were needed to enjoy the pleasures found in the realms of the Gods. Thus, the mummy symbolizes the enjoyment of life even more that the awe of death. Even to this day, mummies inspire a fascination that few ancient artifacts can rival.
